53年前に初めて日本に来た時、私は日本の事を何も知りませんでした。日本人は、福音を聞いた事がない人が多いとだけ理解していました。
日本に来る前、テレビで航空会社のCMを見ました。
そのCMの中で日本人は、ほとんど着物を着ていて、侍が歩き回っていました。
日本は、まだそんな生活だと思っていました。

羽田空港に着いて、飛行機を降りた時、私はビックリしました。
まず、着物を着ている女性は、ほとんどいませんでした。
そして、侍は一人もいませんでした！
私は「侍は、どこですか？」と不思議に思いました。
今でも、その日を思い出す時、私は、自分の無知さを恥ずかしく思います。

ヘブル人への手紙11:8を読むたびに、私は、その経験を思い出します。
「信仰によって、アブラハムは、相続財産として受け取るべき地に出て行けとの召しを受けたとき、これに従い、どこに行くのかを知らないで、出て行きました。」
神様が、アブラハムに「あなたの生まれ故郷を出て行きなさい」と仰せられた時（創世記12:1）
「アブラハムは主がお告げになったとうりに出かけた。」創世記12:4
これは、全き献身をした人の姿です。

アブラハムのような献身を説明する３つの英語の単語があります。
ANYTHING（何でも）
ANYWHERE（何処でも）
ANYTIME（何時でも）

「主のためなら、私は、何でもします。主の御心なら私は、何処でも行きます。
私は、主の導きに何時でも従います。」これは、献身者の祈りです。

キリストが最初の4人の弟子たちに、
「私について来なさい」といわれたとき「彼らは、何もかも捨てて、イエスに従った。」ルカの福音書5:11

　　


WHERE ARE THE SAMURAI? 

When I came to Japan 53 years ago, I knew almost nothing about Japan. The only thing that I knew was that there were many people who had never heard the gospel. Sometimes I saw airlines commercials. In those commercials, everyone was wearing kimonos and samurai were walking around, so I thought life in Japan was still that kind of life.

When I got off the plane at Haneda, I was surprised. Almost no one was wearing a kimono and there wasn’t even one samurai. I wondered, “Where are the samurai?” Even now, when I remember that day, I laugh at my ignorance.

Every time I read Hebrews 11:8, I remember that experience.
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. When God said to Abraham, Get out of your country (Genesis 12:1), Abraham departed as the Lord had spoken to him. (Genesis 12:4)
This is the image of the person who is fully surrendered to the Lord.

There are three English words that explain Abraham’s kind of surrender:
ANYTHING.
ANYWHERE.
ANYTIME.

“If it is for the Lord, I will do anything. If it is the will of the Lord, I will go anywhere. I will follow the leading of the Lord anytime.” This is the prayer of the person who has dedicated his life to the Lord.

When Christ said to the first four disciples, “Follow me,” they forsook all and followed Him. (Luke 5:11)

我が家の庭にハッサクの木があります。
（八朔は、ザボンと文旦に似た柑橘類の雑柑です）グレープフルーツに似ていますが、それほど酸っぱくありません。

ハッサクは、２月の初旬頃、成熟期を迎えます。
今月、強い風が吹いたので数個のハッサクが地面に落ちました。
私は、それを拾って洗って食べてみました。
すると普通よりとても酸っぱい味でした。おそらく、まだ充分に成熟していなかったからでしょう。

まだ充分に霊的成熟していない酸っぱいクリスチャンもいます。
コリントの教会にそんなクリスチャンがいました。
コリント人への手紙3:1でパウロは、そのクリスチャンを「幼子」と呼びました。
酸っぱいクリスチャンの特長とは何でしょうか。

Ⅰコリント人への手紙3:3で私たちは、酸っぱいクリスチャンの二つの特徴を見つけることができます。
「あなたがたは、まだ肉に属しているからです。あなたがたの間にねたみや争いがあることからすれば、あなたがたは肉に属しているのではありませんか。そして、ただの人のように歩んでいるのではありませんか。 」
酸っぱいクリスチャンは、他のクリスチャンをねたみ争い事が好きです。
酸っぱいクリスチャンのもう一つの特徴は、不道徳です。
「あなたがたの間に不品行があるということが言われています。」Ⅰコリント人への手紙5:1
そして、酸っぱいクリスチャンは、教会の一致を壊す人です。
「あなたがたの間には分裂があると聞いています。」
Ⅰコリント人への手紙11:18

ねたみ、争い、不道徳と分裂。これは、酸っぱいクリスチャンの特徴です。
教会の皆さんにお勧めします。
もっと霊的に成熟するクリスチャンになって、酸っぱいクリスチャンが一人もいない教会を目指しましょう。

「ですから、私たちは、キリストについての初歩の教えをあとにして、成熟を目ざして進もうではありませんか。」へブル人への手紙6:1

　　

SOUR CHRISTIANS 

There is a hassaku tree in my yard. (A hassaku is a hybrid of several citrus fruits. It resembles a grapefruit, but it is not as sour as a grapefruit.)

Hassaku ripen in the first part of February. This month there was a strong wind, so several of the hassaku fell to the ground. I picked them up, brought them into the house, washed them, and tried to eat them. They were more sour than usual. It is probably because they were not fully mature yet.

There are Christians who are sour because they are not spiritually mature yet. There were some Christians like this in the church at Corinth. In First Corinthians 3:1 Paul called those Christians “babes.” What are the characteristics of a sour Christian?

In First Corinthians 3:3 we can find two characteristics of sour Christians.
For you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?
A sour Christians envies other Christians and likes to cause strife.

Another characteristic of sour Christians is immorality.
It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you. (First Corinthians 5:1)
Also, sour Christians destroy the unity of the church.
I hear that there are divisions among you.
(First Corinthians 11:18)

Envy, strife, immorality, and division. These are the characteristics of a sour Christian. Church members, let’s become Christians who are spiritually mature and make our church a church where there are no sour Christians.
Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to maturity. (Hebrews 6:1)

私は、８年前に現在の家に引っ越して来ました。
初日から、お隣さんの犬が私を見るたびに大声で吠えます。
犬は、やがて私に慣れて吠えなくなるだろう思っていたけど、やはり、今でも私を見る度にいつも吠えます。
私は、何度か犬と仲良くなろうとしたけど、近づくと犬は、ウ～と唸り声をあげます。全く変化はありません。

最近、あることに気がついて、犬は吠えない様になりました。
犬は私に気付いて欲しいから吠えるのだと分かり、犬に語りかけるようにしました。
出かける時、犬に英語で「How are you today? What’s the matter?」と声をかけると犬は、不思議なそうな顔で私を見つめて吠えなくなりました。
結局、犬は私に気付いて欲しかったから吠えていたのでした。

世の中には、お隣さんの犬に似ている人が大勢いると思いませんか？　彼らは、孤独で、誰かに、一人でもいいから「気付いて欲しい」という願いを持って毎日を過ごしています。
彼らは、心の中で叫んでいます。
「私を見てください！　私の存在を認めてください！」

詩篇142:4に、彼らの孤独を表すダビデの言葉があります。
「私を顧みる者もなく、私のたましいに気を配る者もいません。」
私たちも、ダビデと同じように
「私のたましいに気を配る者もいません。」
と思うようになるとき、神様の約束を思い出しましょう。
「わたしは決してあなたを離れず、また、あなたを捨てない。」へブル人への手紙13:5
誰も自分に気付かない時、主は、私たちを見てくださいます。
「見よ。主の目は主を恐れる者に注がれる。その恵みを待ち望む者に。」詩篇33:18

　　  

THE NEIGHBOR’S DOG　 

I moved into this house eight years ago. From the first day, the neighbor’s dog barked at me every time he saw me. I thought the dog would eventually become used to me and stop barking, but to this day he barks at me every time he sees me. Many times, I have tried to become his friend, but when I go near to him, he growls.

Recently I became aware of something and was able to have the dog stop barking at me. When I realized that the dog was barking at me because he wanted me to notice him, I decided to talk to the dog. When I leave the house, if I say, “How are you today? What’s the matter?” the dog will look at me with a strange face and stop barking. The dog barked at me because he wanted me to pay attention to him.

Don’t you think there are a lot of people in the world who resemble my neighbor’s dog? All alone, they spend each day wishing for someone, even just one person, to pay attention to them. In their heart they are crying out, “Please see me! Please recognize my existence!”

In verse 4 of Psalm 142 there are the words of David that express their loneliness.
There was no man that would know me. No man cared for my soul.
When we, like David, begin to think, “There is no one who cares about me,” let us remember the promise of God.
I will never leave you nor forsake you.
(Hebrews 13:5)

When no one will pay attention to us and see us, the Lord will see us.
Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy.
(Psalm 33:18)

UNOと言うカードゲームをやった事がありますか？
大人も子供もできる簡単なゲームです。
UNOを作ったマテル社は、2018年にUNO FLIPという新しいゲームを発売しました。

UNOのカードと違ってUNO FLIPのカードは、両面のカードです。つまり、両面に数字と色があります。
誰かがUNO  FLIPというカードを出すと、皆さんは、自分のカードをひっくり返さなければなりません。
ちょうど自分のカードを数字と色で並べて、次に出すカードの計画を立てていた時、誰かがFLIPカードを出せば自分の計画は、台無しにされてしまいます。

初めてこのゲームをしたとき、私はUNO FLIPは人生に似ていると思いました。
ちょうど人生の計画が立った時、私達の人生をひっくり返す出来事が起こります。
失業します・病気にかかります・事故に遭います・落第します・パンデミックが起こります・愛する人が死にます。
人生がひっくり返された時、どうしたらいいのでしょうか。

ダビデの人生がひっくり返された時どうしたでしょうか。
ゴリヤテを殺した時、ダビデは、イスラエルの英雄となりました。しかし、ダビデの人気を妬んだサウルは、ダビデを殺そうとしました。
それでダビデは、敵の国へ逃げなければなりませんでした。
敵に殺されないために、ダビデは、気が狂った振りをしました。
この時、ダビデは詩篇34篇を書きました。私達の人生がひっくり返されたときには、この詩篇の言葉に心を留めましょう。
「主の使いは主を恐れる者の周りに陣を張り、彼らを助け出される。」詩篇34:7

「正しい者の悩みは多い。しかし、主はそのすべてからかれを救い出させる。」詩篇34:19

　　 

WHEN LIFE IS FLIPPED OVER 

Have you ever played a card game called UNO? It is a simple game that both adults and children can play. Mattel, the company that created UNO, created a new game called UNO FLIP in 2018.

Different from the UNO cards, the UNO FLIP cards are double-sided. In other words, there are colors and numbers on both sides of the cards. When someone plays the FLIP card, everyone must flip over their cards. Just when you arrange your cards by color and number and plan which card you will play next, if someone plays a FLIP card, your plan is ruined.

The first time I played UNO FLIP, I thought that it resembles life. Just when we have made the plan for our life, an event occurs that flips our life upside down. We lose our job. We become sick. We have an accident. We fail a test. A pandemic breaks out. A loved one dies. When our life is flipped upside down, what should we do?

When David’s life was flipped upside down, what did he do? When he killed Goliath, he became the hero of his country. However, Saul became jealous of the popularity of David and tried to kill him, so David had to flee into the country of his enemies. To prevent them from killing him, David pretended to be insane.

It was at this time that David wrote Psalm 34. When our life is flipped upside down, let’s turn our hearts to the words in this Psalm.
The angel of the Lord encamps around them that fear him and delivers them. (Psalm 34:7)

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. (Psalm 34:19)

これは、インドにある二つの村についての話です。
シェイクスピアの「ロミオとジュリエット」に似ている物語です。二つの村の間に森がありました。
1930年にハチーラの住民が最も森に近い村だと主張して、ハチーラの住民だけが森の薪を集めることが出来ると決めてしまいました。

隣のアエラの住民は、ハチーラの決議に抗議して90年間の冷戦が続きました。
それは二つの村での激しい憎しみ合いでした。彼らが旅をする時、相手の村を通る事を避け、遠回りをしました。

この冷戦を終結し、二つの村に平和をもたらしたのは、青年達の愛です。
二つの村の青年達は、同じ大学で出会って恋に落ちました。
先月行われた儀式でハチーラとアエラの住民は青年達の結婚を賛成し祝福して90年間の争いの終結をようやく迎えました。

ハチーラとアエラの間の争いは、神様と人間との間の争いに似ています。
聖書によると罪のゆえに人間は、自分勝手な道に向かって、神様から遠く離れているものとなりました。（イザヤ書53:6）
神様と人間の間に敵意があったとエペソ人への手紙2:14-15に書いてあります。

インドの二つの村に愛が平和をもたらしたように愛は、神様と人間に平和をもたらしました。
その愛は、神様の愛です。
「私たちがまだ罪人であったとき、キリストが私たちのために死んでくださったことにより、神は私たちに対するご自身の愛を明らかにしておられます。」
ローマ人への手紙5:8

私たちは、キリストの血によって神様に近い者とされました。（エペソ人への手紙2:13）

キリストの十字架によって、神様と人間の間にあった敵意は、葬り去られました。（エペソ人への手紙2:16）

　　 

THE LOVE THAT BROUGHT
PEACE TO TWO VILLAGES

This is a story about two villages in India. It is a story that resembles Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” There was a forest between the two towns. In 1930 the people of Hachila decided that since their town was closer to the forest, only they could collect firewood from the forest.

The people of Ajera protested the decision of Hachila and a cold war that would continue for 90 years began. The hatred between the two villages was so intense that people on a trip would go the long way around to avoid passing through the other village.

It was the love of the young people that ended the cold war and brought peace to the villages. Young people from the two villages went to the same college, met, and fell in love. In a ceremony held last month, the people of Hacila and Ajera agreed to the marriage of the young people and decided to end the 90-year-old conflict.

The conflict between Hachila and Ajera resembles the conflict between God and man. According to the Bible, because of sin, man went his own way and went far away from God. (Isaiah 53:6) In Ephesians 2:14-15 it is written that there was enmity between God and man.

Just as love brought peace to the two villages in India, love, God’s love, brought peace to God and man.
But God commends His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (Ephesians 2:13)

The enmity that was between God and man was put to death by the cross of Christ.
(Ephesians 2:16)
