When I came to Japan in 1968, I was amazed at many things. One of those things was the hard Japanese pillow. The first time I slept on a Japanese pillow, I felt like I was sleeping on a brick. I remembered the experience of Jacob.
So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep.

I don’t like small, hard pillows. I like big, fluffy pillows. Every night I sleep on two fluffy pillows.
Whenever I travel by car, I take my pillows with me. Last month I went to my son’s house. When I got out of my car, my grandson asked, “Grandpa, did you bring your pillows?” Just then I realized that I had forgotten my pillows. While I was at my son’s home, I slept on a small, thin pillow. Next time I will be careful not to forget my pillows.

What kind of pillow was Jesus’ pillow? Have you ever thought about that? According to Mark 4:38, one day when Jesus rode on a ship, He slept on a pillow that was on the ship.

However, it appears that Jesus did not have His own pillow. One day a man said to Jesus,
Lord, I will follow You wherever You go. Jesus replied, Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.
(Luke 9:57-58)

Not only did Jesus not have a pillow, He had nowhere to lay His head. Whether your pillow is a hard pillow like a brick or a soft, fluffy pillow like my pillows, tonight when you lay your head on that pillow, meditate on these words:
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.
(Second Corinthians 8:9)
