多くの方々が、北九州教会の献堂式に出席しました。教会の方は出席者の靴に番号をくれました。
帰る時、一人ひとりの靴をすぐに探せるためでした。
番号をもらった時、私は「OH NO！」と叫びました。

13番でした。4番が多くの日本人にとって不吉な番号であるように、多くのアメリカ人は13番が不吉な番号だと思っています。
例えば、多くのアメリカ人は13日に危険な行動を避けます。彼らは13日に飛行機に乗りません。13日に商売の取引をしません。13日に家を買いません。さらに13日に家を出ない人もいます。多くの病院やホテルに13階がありません。空港に13番のゲートがありません。
この迷信はどこから来たのでしょうか。

昔から多くの人達はキリストが13日の金曜日に十字架にかけられたと思っていので不吉な番号だと思われています。
13番をもらった時、私は「OH NO！」と叫んだけど、本当は13番を恐れていません。
まず、キリストが13日の金曜日に十字架にかけられた事を信じていません。キリストが13日の金曜日に十字架にかけられた事は聖書のどこにも書いてありません。
私が13番を恐れていない理由はもう一つあります。
私は13日に生まれたからです。

クリスチャンにとって、この時の一番大切な数字は13ではありません。３です。キリストは十字架にかけられましたが、彼は３日目に蘇られました。キリストの空の墓は彼を信じる人にとって素晴らしい望みを与えます。

「私たちの主イエス・キリストの父なる神がほめたたえられますように。神は、ご自分の大きなあわれみのゆえに、イエス・キリストが死者の中からよみがえられたことによって、私たちを新しく生まれさせて、生ける望みを持つようにしてくださいました。」Ⅰペテロの手紙1:3

　　　　

Number 13　

So many people attended Kitakyushu BBC’s dedication ceremony that the church members gave shoe numbers to everyone so they could find everyone’s shoes quickly after the service. When I received my number, I said, “OH NO.” It was number 13. Just as many Japanese think that the number 4 is an unlucky number, many Americans think that the number 13 is an unlucky number.

For example, many Americans avoid any kind of dangerous activity on the 13th. They will not fly in an airplane on the 13th. They won’t do any business transactions on the 13th. They won’t buy a house on the 13th. In fact, there are people who will not leave their home on the 13th. In many hospitals and hotels there is no 13th floor. Airports do not have a 13th gate.

From where did this superstition come? It came from Christianity. From long, long ago people have thought that Christ was crucified on Friday the 13th, so they consider the number 13 to be unlucky.

When I received number 13, I said, “OH NO,” but actually I am not afraid of number 13. First of all, I don’t believe that Christ was crucified on Friday the 13th. The Bible does not say that Christ was crucified on the 13th. There is another reason why I am not afraid of the number 13. I was born on the 13th.

To Christians, the important number at this time of the year is not 13. It is 3. Christ was crucified, but He arose on the 3rd day. His empty tomb gives a wonderful hope to all who believe in Him.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
