私は彼の椅子に座りました

エゼキエル書3:15でエゼキエルは書きました。
「そこで、私はテル・アビブの捕囚の民のところへ行った。彼らはケバル川のほとりに住んでいたので、私は彼らが住んでいるその所で、七日間、ぼう然として、彼らの中にとどまっていた。」
英語の聖書に「私は彼らの中にとどまっていた」の代わりに「私は彼らが座った所に座りました。」と書いてあります。

ビル・ニール宣教師の葬儀に行った時、私はこの箇所を思い出しました。葬儀が終わってから静岡にある教会の牧師が私をニール先生の教会に連れて行ってくれました。
二人の教会員がいたので教会の中に入る事が出来ました。近くにいた姉妹が説明してくれました。
「最後の一年間ニール先生は立って説教する事ができなかったので、彼はこの椅子に座って、私達に聖書を教えてくださいました」
私はしばらくニール先生が座った椅子に座って、彼の気持ちを連想しました。
彼はもう86歳でした。1964年に日本に来て53年間忠実に福音を宣べ伝えました。
そして彼の健康が衰え始めた頃、日本宣教を引退してアメリカに帰国しても誰も彼を責める事ができなかったと思います。
しかし、彼は天に召されるまで日本人に福音を宣べ伝え続けました。

なぜでしょうか。
ローマ人への手紙10:1で使徒パウロは書きました。
「兄弟たち。私が心の望みとし、また彼らのために神に願い求めているのは、彼らの救われることです。」
パウロにとって、「彼ら」はユダヤ人でした。 ニール先生にとって「彼ら」は日本人でした。
ニール先生は日本人を愛して彼らの救いを望んでいました。
彼は最後の最後まで福音を宣べ伝えました。
日本の皆さん、他の国から来た人がこれほど日本人を愛する事ができるなら、皆さんはどれほど自分の同胞を愛して、彼等の救いを望むべきでしょうか。
あなたにとって「彼ら」は誰ですか。
家族ですか。兄弟ですか。友達ですか。
誰であっても「彼ら」の救いを自分の心の望みにして、熱心に神様に願い求めましょう。

　　　　

I SAT WHERE HE SAT　　

In Ezekiel 3:15 Ezekiel wrote, Then I came to the captives at Tel Abib, who dwelt by the River Chebar; and I sat where they sat, and remained there astonished among them seven days.

I remembered these words when I attended the funeral of Missionary Bill Neel. After the funeral, Pastor Enomoto took me to Brother Neel’s church. Two of the church members were there, so I was able to go inside the church. One of the members explained, “During his last year, Pastor Neel could not stand when he preached, so he sat in this chair and taught us the Bible.”

For a while I sat where he sat and tried to imagine his feelings. He was 86 years old. He came to Japan in 1964 and faithfully preached the gospel for 53 years. If, when his health worsened, he had stopped his evangelism in Japan and returned to America, no one could have blamed him. However, he continued to preache the gospel until the Lord called him home.

Why? In Romans 10:1 the apostle Paul wrote, Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. To the apostle Paul, “they” were the Jews. To Missionary Bill Neel, “they” were the Japanese. Because he loved the Japanese, he preached the gospel to the very end.

People of Japan, if a person who came from another country could love the Japanese this much, how much more should you love your countrymen and desire their salvation? Who is “they” to you? Your parents? Your brothers and sisters? Your friends? Whoever “they” is to you, make their salvation the desire of your heart and pray fervently to God.
