皆さんは、飛行機で長時間の旅をする時、その機内で寝る事ができますか？
私は、なかなか寝る事ができません。
22日に日本に帰った時、デンバーから成田まで11時間かかりました。
ずっと起きていましたが、到着2時間前にうとうととして眠ってしまいました。起きた時、少しお腹が空いていました。
寝ている間に食事のサービスがあったようです。私はそれを逃しました。

そして乗り換えて福岡行の便に乗った途端、私は寝てしまいました。起きた時、喉が喝いていました。私寝ている間に、飲物のサービスは終わっていました。また、それを逃しました。

マタイの福音書25章に書いてある例え話の中で、花婿を待っている５人の娘達は同じような経験をしました。
「花婿が来るのが遅れたので、うとうとして眠り始めた。」マタイの福音書25:5
そして、花婿がようやく来た時、彼女達は彼を迎える準備ができていなかったので彼女達は結婚式に出席する事ができませんでした。
もちろん、この話は、キリストの再臨についての例え話です。
マタイの福音書25:13に「目を覚ましていなさい。その日、その時を知らないからです。」

ルカの福音書12:40にも同じような忠告が書いてあります。
「用心していなさい。人の子は、思いがけない時に来る。」

ローマ人への手紙12:11に書いてあります。
「勤勉で怠らず、霊に燃え、主に仕えなさい。」

皆さん、今あなたの霊は燃えていますか？　寝ていますか？　もし寝ているなら、
「眠っていないで、目をさまして、慎み深くいましょう。」Ⅰテサロニケ人への手紙5:6

　　　 

WHILE I WAS SLEEPING　

Can you sleep on a plane during a flight that takes several hours? I have a hard time sleeping on a plane. When I returned to Japan on Tuesday, the flight from Denver to Narita took 11 hours. I was awake most of the time. Finally, a couple of hours before arrival, I fell asleep. When I awoke, I was hungry, but while I was sleeping, the meal service ended, so I missed that meal.

I fell asleep as soon as I boarded the flight to Fukuoka. When I awoke, I was thirsty, but while I was sleeping, the drink service ended, so I missed out on that too.

In a parable written in Chapter 25 of Matthew, five virgins who were waiting on the bridegroom had the same experience.
While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
When the bridegroom finally came, they were not ready to greet him, so they were not able to attend the wedding.

Of course, this is a parable about the second coming of Christ, so n verse 13 it is written,
Watch therefore; for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

There is a similar warning in Luke 12:40.
Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

Romans 12:11 says, Not slothful in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.
Is your spirit fervent right now or is it sleeping? If it is sleeping,
Let us not sleep, as do others, but let us watch and be sober.(First Thessalonians 5:6)

1959年～2000年まで私の牧師はジャック・ディズビル先生でした。
先日ジャクソンビル市に行った時、私はディズビル先生に会いと思ったので、電話して「今日、会たいけど、いますか？」と聞きました。
先生は「今レストランにいますが、10時までに帰るので、ぜひ来てください」と言いました。
私は9:40頃、先生の家に着きましたが、先生の車はなく、車庫のドアも締まっていました。
私は、先生が、まだ帰宅してないと思い込んで、車の中で待つ事にしました。45分ぐらい待ちましたが、先生は帰って来ませんでした。

それから私は先生に電話して「先生、どこですか？」と聞きました。私は先生の返事にビックリしました。「あなたを待っていますよ！」私は聞きました。「先生、今、家の中にいるのですか？」彼は「はい、家の中です」と答えました。私が先生の家に着く前に、彼は先に帰っていて、車を車庫の中に入れ、家の中で私を待っていたのです。ずっと私が先生の家の前で待っている間、先生は家の中で私をずっと待っていました。

気をつけないと、クリスチャンは同じような経験に遭います。私達は主に祈って、そしてずっと主の答えを待ちますが、もしかしたら神様は御自分を待っている私たちを待っておられるかも知れません。例えば、神様は私たしが罪を告白する事を待っておられるかも知れません。

「わたしの名を呼び求めているわたしの民がみずからへりくだり、祈りをささげ、わたしの顔を慕い求め、その悪い道から立ち返るなら、わたしが親しく天から聞きます。」Ⅱ歴代誌7:14

また、私達が神様を待っている時に、神様は私達が主の御心に従う事を待っておられるかも知れません。
「また求めるものは何でも神からいただくことができます。なぜなら、私たちが神の命令を守り、神に喜ばれることを行なっているからです。」Ⅰヨハネの手紙3:22

　　　 

WAITING ON MY PASTOR WHO WAS WAITING ON ME　

Jack Dinsbeer was my pastor from 1959 to 2000. When I went to Jacksonville this month, I wanted to see him, so I called him. “I would like to see you today. Will you be at home?” He replied, “I am at a restaurant now, but I will be home by 10:00, so please come.”

I arrived at his home about 9:40. His car was not there and the garage door was shut, so I assumed he had not come home yet. I waited in the car about 45 minutes, but he did not return.

Finally, I called him. “Where are you?” I was surprised at his answer. “I am waiting for you.” I asked, “Are you at home now?” He replied, “Yes, I am.” Before I arrived at his home, he had already returned, put the car into the garage and was waiting for me. All the time I was waiting outside of his home for him, he was inside his home waiting for me.

If Christians are not careful, we shall have the same experience. We pray to the Lord and wait for His answer, but perhaps God is waiting on us who are waiting on Him. For example, God may be waiting for us to confess our sins.  
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven.
(Second Chronicles 7:14)

Also, when we are waiting on God, perhaps He is waiting on us to obey His will.
And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
(First John 3:22)

英語に「I can see the light at the end of the tunnel」と言う面白い表現があります。
難しい仕事を長時間している時の表現です。
ようやくその仕事が完了する間近に私達は、よく「I can see the light at the end of the tunnel」と言います。

2月から私は12の州にある22の教会を訪問しました。
28回の説教しました。
残り２つの教会と２回の説教となりました。
ファローの長いトンネルの出口の光がようやく見えてきました。

「I can see the light at the end of the tunnel」のもう一つ別の表現があります。
長いトンネルのような苦しい試練に遭う時です。
私が鹿児島に住んでいる息子に会いに行く途中、多くのトンネルを通らなければなりません。
その中の２のトンネルはとても長く６㎞以上もあります。
その長いトンネルの中で、恐怖心はありませんが、ようやくトンネルの出口が見えた時には安心します。

クリスチャンが忠実に主に従っていても長いトンネルのような試練に遭います。
切なる祈りをしても、その試練が長く続きます。

そんな時、ダビデと同じように主が共におられる事を覚える事は大切です。
「たとい、死の陰の谷を歩くことがあっても、私はわざわいを恐れません。あなたが私とともにおられますから。」詩篇23:4

また、長い試練のトンネルの中にいる時、いつかはトンネルの出口の光が見えてくる事を覚える事も大切です。

「主は私を光に連れ出し、私はその義を見ることができる。」ミカ書7:9

「義人の道は、あけぼのの光のようだ。いよいよ輝きを増して真昼となる。」箴言4:18

　　　 

THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

There is an interesting expression in English – “I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.” It is an expression we use when we have been doing some difficult work for a long time. When the time draws near to finally complete that work, we say, “I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Since February, I have visited 22 churches in 12 states. I have preached 28 times. Now only two churches and two sermons are left. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

There is another situation when we use the expression, “I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.” It is when we experience a trial like a long tunnel. When I go to visit my son in Kagoshima, I have to pass through several tunnels. Two of those tunnels are very long – almost four miles. I am not afraid while I am in the long tunnels, but I am always relieved when I see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Even if Christians follow the Lord faithfully, there will be times when we experience trials like a long tunnel. Even if we pray fervently, the trial will go on and on. When that happens, it is important to remember what David remembered – the fact that the Lord is with us.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me. (Psalm 23:4)

When we experience a trial like a long tunnel, it is also important to remember that eventually we shall see the light at the end of the tunnel.
He will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness. (Micah 7:9)

The path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. (Proverbs 4:18)

2月から私の孫ネイサンは、パリスアイランドと言う有名な訓練所で海兵隊の訓練を受けて5月4日に彼は卒業しました。
卒業前の最後の訓練は“THE CRUCIBLE”と言うテストです。
これは海兵隊の新人を肉体的・精神的・道徳的に訓練する54時間の非情に厳しいテストです。 新人は20㎏の荷物を背負いながら、77㎞を歩かなければなりません。その間、彼は2回の食事と6時間の睡眠だけが許されます。
神様がクリスチャンを“THE CRUCIBLE”と同じような試練に合わせる時があります。
海兵隊の新人が受けるテストの目的は新人を忍耐強い兵隊にする事です。クリスチャンが遭遇する試練の目的も同じです。

「私の兄弟たち。さまざまな試練に会うときは、それをこの上もない喜びと思いなさい。信仰がためされると忍耐が生じるということを、あなたがたは知っているからです。」
ヤコブの手紙1:2-3

忍耐が生じると、この結果になります。
「患難が忍耐を生み出し、忍耐が練られた品性を生み出し、練られた品性が希望を生み出す。」
ローマ人への手紙5:3-4

私達が試練に堪え忍ぶと、この結果もあります。
「愛する者たち。あなたがたを試みるためにあなたがたの間に燃えさかる火の試練を、何か思いがけないことが起こったかのように驚き怪しむことなく、むしろ、キリストの苦しみにあずかれるのですから、喜んでいなさい。それは、キリストの栄光が現われるときにも、喜びおどる者となるためです。」
Ⅰペテロの手紙4:12-13

そして“THE CRUCIBLE”のような信仰生活のテストを受ける時、主の約束を思い出しましょう。
「あなたがたの会った試練はみな人の知らないようなものではありません。神は真実な方ですから、あなたがたを耐えることのできないような試練に会わせるようなことはなさいません。むしろ、耐えることのできるように、試練とともに、脱出の道も備えてくださいます。」

THE CRUCIBLE　

Since February, my grandson, Nathan, has undergone training at Parris Island, a famous training facility. He will graduate on Friday (5/4).

Before graduation, there is a test called “The Crucible.” This is a 54-hour severe test to train the recruit physically, mentally, and morally. The recruit must march 48 miles carrying 45 pounds of gear. During the test, he is allowed only two meals and six hours of sleep.

There are times when God causes Christians to meet trials like “The Crucible.” The purpose of the Marine recruits’ test is to produce soldiers who have endurance. The purpose of the Christian’s trial is the same.
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. (James 1:2-3)

When patience is formed, it produces this result.
Tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope. (Romans 5:3-4)

If we endure the trial, there is this result too.
Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. (First Peter 4:12-13)

And when we are undergoing a trial like “The Crucible” in our Christian life, let’s remember the promise of the Lord.
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
(First Corinthians 10:13)
