台湾から日本に帰る時、タクシーでホテルから空港まで行きました。タクシーの運転手は、とても親切でした。
まず、彼は英語で「Time?」と聞きました。
つまり時間は大丈夫ですか？ 急いでいますか？
私は「Time, OK.」と答えました。

次に彼は、私に英語で「Air?」と聞きました。
つまり、タクシーの中の温度は大丈夫ですか？
私は「Air, OK.」と答えました。

空港に着いた時、彼は荷物を降ろしてくれました。
台湾では、チップを渡す習慣はありませんが私は、彼にチップをあげました。
笑顔になった彼は私に言いました「I love you.」
どう思いますか？ その運転手は本当に私を愛していると思いますか？
もちろんそうでありません。
私は彼にチップをあげたので彼は「I love you.」と言いました。

彼を責める前に自分自身にこの質問をしてください。
「私は、なぜ神様を愛していますか？」もしかしたら神様が私たちを祝福してくださるから、私たちは神様に「I love you.」と言っています。
あるいは、神様は、私たちの祈りに答えてくださるので私たちは、神様に「I love you.」と言っているのでしょうか？　このような愛は本当の愛ではありません。

本当に神様を愛しているクリスチャンは、神様の御業のゆえにではなく、神様の性質のゆえに神様を愛するクリスチャンです。 聖書によると神様は哀れみ深い、情け深い、恵みとまことに富んでおられるお方です。（出エジプト記34:6）

私たちが信じている神様はこんな神様であるとわかっているクリスチャンは真心から神様に「I love you.」と言えるクリスチャンです。

　　　 

I LOVE YOU　

When I returned from Taiwan to Japan, I went by taxi from the hotel to the airport. The taxi driver was very kind. First, he asked me in English, “Time?” In other words, is the time OK? Are you in a hurry? I replied, “Time, OK.”

Next, he asked me in English, “Air OK?” In other words, is the temperature in the cab okay? I replied, “Air, OK.”

When we arrived at the airport, he unloaded my luggage for me. In Taiwan tipping is not a custom, but I gave him a tip. With a big smile on his face, he said, “I love you.”

What do you think? Did that driver really love me? Of course not. He said, “I love you” because I gave him a tip.

Before we criticize him, let us ask ourselves this question. Why do I love God? Perhaps we say, “I love you” to God because He blesses us, or maybe we say “I love you” to God because He answers our prayers. This kind of love is not true love.

The Christian who truly loves God is not the Christian who loves God because of what He does but because of who He is. According to the Bible, God is merciful and gracious, abundant in goodness and truth. (Exodus 34:6)

The Christian who understands that the God in whom we believe is this kind of God is the Christian who can say to God from his heart, “I love you.”
