長野県上田市に行った時、上田BBCの牧師は私を「無言館」という面白い博物館に連れて行って下さいました。
戦没画学生慰霊美術館「無言館」とは、第二次世界大戦で没した画学生の慰霊を掲げて作られた美術館で、美術館「信濃デッサン館」の分館として1997年に開館した。館主は窪島誠一郎。

自らも出征経験を持つ画家の野見山暁治とともに全国を回って、戦没画学生の遺族を訪問して遺作を蒐集した。
施設名の「無言館」は、展示される絵画は何も語らず「無言」ではあるが、見る側に多くを語りかけるという意味で命名したというが、客もまた展示される絵画を見て「無言」になるという意味をも含んでいるという。

戦死した画家たちは、今でも自分の絵を通して語っています。 同じように、クリスチャンは神様の無言の証人になる方法があります。もちろん、クリスチャンは言葉で福音を宣べ伝えるべきです。マルコの福音書16:15に私たちは口ですべての人々にキリストの福音を宣べ伝えるように命令されています。

しかし、福音を宣べ伝える方法は、もう一つあります。それは聖霊の実（愛、喜び、平安、寛容、親切、善意、誠実、柔和と自制）が他人に見られる生き方をすることです。すなわち、ほかの人々と違う生き方をすることです。上田BBCの牧師自身は、九州大学の学生であった時、友達の無言の証しによってキリストに導かれました。
他の人々の注意を引く魅力的な生き方は、福音伝道にとても効果的な方法です。

「あなたがたは、世界の光です。このように、あなたがたの光を人々の前で輝かせ、人々があなたがたの良い行ないを見て、天におられるあなたがたの父をあがめるようにしなさい。」マタイの福音書5:14・16

　　　 

SILENT WITNESS 

While I was at Ueda in Nagano Prefecture, Pastor Ogawa of the Ueda Bible Baptist Church took me to an interesting museum called “The Silent Museum.” This museum, which was opened during World War II, is an art museum that displays paintings by artists that were killed during the war. Mr. Kuboshima, the owner of the museum, and a painter named Nomiyama went around the world collecting the paintings. Visitors to the museum observe the paintings that speak to them silently.

Even today these painters speak through their paintings. There is a way for Christians too to become the silent witnesses of the Lord. Of course, Christians should preach the gospel with words. In Mark 16:15 Christians are commanded to preach the gospel with words to all people.

However, there is one more method of preaching the gospel. It is a way of living in which the fruit of the Holy Spirit (love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance) can be seen by others. In other words, it is a way of living that is different from the way of living of others. When he was a student at Kyushu University, Pastor Ogawa was led to Christ by the silent witness of a friend.

A winsome lifestyle that attracts the attention of people in our neighborhood and people at our place of work is a very effective method of evangelism.
You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14,16)
