A Father’s Lament

A Father’s Lament

David heard that his son, Absalom, had been killed in battle.
Then the king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept. And as he went, he said thus: “O my son Absalom—my son, my son Absalom—if only I had died in your place! O Absalom my son, my son!”
(Second Samuel 18:33)

Right now I am lamenting like David. It is because I heard last week that my daughter, Rebecca, has cancer. I want to cry out, “O my daughter Rebecca – my daughter, my daughter Rebecca – if only I could suffer in your place. O Rebecca my daughter, my daughter!” Everyone who is a parent will understand my feelings. When your child is sick or in pain, if it were possible, you would like to take the place of your child.

Regretfully, we cannot take the place of our child, so the parent who has to watch the suffering of his child is a parent with a broken heart.

However, there was one parent who was able to take the place of His children – God. When God saw us suffering because of our sins, He became a man and on the cross received the punishment for sin in our place.
God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

I cannot save my daughter. Every day I can cry and pray for her, but that is all I can do. However, our heavenly Father was able to save us.
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (Second Corinthians 5:21)
