自分の英雄に会ってはいけません

先日、NBAプロバスケットボールの選手のインタビューを聞いた時、彼は私が今まで聞いたことのない表現をしました。
「Never meet your hero.」
「自分の英雄に会ってはいけません。」という意味です。

彼の英雄は、非常に有名なNBAプロバスケットボールの選手でした。彼の夢は、自分の英雄と一緒にバスケットボールをすることでした。しかし、同じチームに入った時、彼は、とても失望しました。彼の英雄は、とても自己中心で、自分をチームより大切にしました。
自分の英雄と一緒にプレーするのは、あまり楽しい経験では、なかったそうです。

私たちの英雄が誰であっても、その英雄に近づけば近づくほど、その人の欠点に気がつきます。
遠くから尊敬していた人にようやく会うことができた時、とても失望する事になるかもしれません。

しかし、例外が一人います。イエス・キリストです。私は、65年前にキリストを信じました。
この長年の間、聖書と自分の経験を通してキリストの事を知れば知るほどに彼を敬い、彼を愛します。

英語にこの賛美があります。
♪It gets sweeter as the days go by.
　It gets sweeter as the moments fly.
　His love is richer, deeper, fuller,
　sweeter. Sweeter, sweeter, sweeter
　as the days go by. ♬
「来る日も、来る日も、キリストとの関係が素晴らしくなります。彼の愛は、ますます豊かな愛、深い愛、完全な愛、素晴らしい愛になる。」という意味です。

「あなたがたが、すべての聖徒とともに、その広さ、長さ、高さ、深さがどれほどであるかを理解する力を持つようになり、人知をはるかに超えたキリストの愛を知ることができますように。」エペソ人への手紙3:18-19

　　　 

NEVER MEET YOUR HERO

I was listening to the talk of a pro basketball player when he used an expression I had never heard before –
“Never meet your hero.”

His hero was a very famous basketball player. His dream was to play ball with his hero. However, when he joined the same team, he was quite disappointed. His hero was self-centered and made himself more important than the team. His experience of playing with his hero was not a very pleasant experience.

No matter who our hero may be, the closer we get to that person, the more we notice his flaws. When we finally meet someone that we have admired from afar, we may be greatly disappointed.

There is one exception – Jesus Christ. I believed in Christ 65 years ago. During these long years, the more I come to know Christ through the Bible and my experiences, the more I reverence Him and love Him.

That you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height--to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge. (Ephesians 3:18-19)
