クリスマスを知らない国

49年前に日本に来た時、私の家族はカルチャーショックを受けました。
それは、家に入る時に靴を脱ぐ事、箸で食事をする事、道の左側を運転する事等、慣れるのに時間がかかりました。

そして最も大きなカルチャーショックは私達が日本で過ごした最初のクリスマスの時でした。
我が家はクリスマスの雰囲気でした。クリスマスツリーがありました。その下にプレゼントが置いてありました。妻と子供達は家をきれいに飾り付けしました。

しかし家の外にはクリスマスの雰囲気が全くありませんでした。
家をクリスマス飾り付けする人達は、あまりいませんでした。 町にイルミネーションも見られませんでした。商店街でもクリスマス・ソングのBGMも流れていませんでした。
私達家族の最初の日本でのクリスマスは非情に淋しいクリスマスでした。
私は思いました。「日本はクリスマスを知らない国です」

この49年の間に日本のクリスマスはとっても変わりました。家を飾り付けする家族は増えてきました。町ではきれいなイルミネーションを見ることができます。買物に行くとモール等ではクリスマス・ソングのBGMを楽しむ事ができます。
しかし、私の意見は変わっていません。日本はクリスマスを知らない国です。なぜなら、日本のクリスマスはキリストを除いたクリスマスだからです。日本はなぜかクリスマスを「Ｘ'mas」と変えてしまいました。本当のクリスマスは救い主イエス・キリストがお生まれになった事をお祝いする日です。キリストを除いたクリスマスはクリスマスではありません。 単なるイベントです。

クリスマス飾り・イルミネーション・プレゼント・ケーキ等を楽しみながら、このお祝いを生み出した出来事を忘れないで下さい。
「きょうダビデの町で、あなたがたのために、救い主がお生まれになりました。この方こそ主キリストです。」

THE COUNTRY THAT DOES NOT KNOW CHRISTMAS　

49 years ago, when my family came to Japan, we experienced culture shock. It took us a while to get used to things like removing our shoes when we entered a house, eating with chopsticks, and driving on the left side of the road; however, our greatest culture shock came when we spent our first Christmas in Japan.

Inside our home, there was an atmosphere of Christmas. There was a Christmas tree. There were presents under the tree. My wife and children decorated the house beautifully. However, outside our home there was no Christmas atmosphere at all. There was almost no one who decorated his home. There was no illumination in the town. There were no stores that played Christmas songs.

Our first Christmas in Japan was a lonely Christmas. I thought, “Japan is a country that does not know Christmas.”

During these 49 years, Christmas in Japan has changed a great deal. More and more people are decorating their homes. In town, we can see wonderful illumination. When we go shopping, we can enjoy the Christmas songs that the stores are playing.

However, my opinion has not changed. Japan is a country that does not know Christmas because the Christmas of Japan is a Christmas that has removed Christ. Japan has changed Christmas into “Xmas.” Christmas should be a time to celebrate the birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Christmas that leaves out Christ is not Christmas. It is just much ado about nothing.

While you are enjoying the decorations and the illumination and the presents and the cake, do not forget the event that brought about Christmas.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:11)
