暗くなる前に

先週の日曜日に私はノースカロライナ州のリンビルと言う街に行きました。
リンビルはスキー場の多い山の上にある町です。
私は日曜日の夜にリンビルに泊まるつもりでしたが、天気予報によると、その晩、大雪になるおそれがあったので、教会の牧師は、午後の集会が終わったら、早く帰った方がいいよと言われました。
月曜日の朝まで待ったら、帰る事が出来ないかもしれないからです。午後の集会は3時に終わりました。

私は素早く車に乗って、娘メリーが住んでいるローリーと言う街に向かって行きました。
ここから４時間位かかるので、かなりスピードを出し車を飛ばしました。
なぜなら、年をとって目が弱くなったので、夜の運転を出来るだけ避けたいと思ったからです。「暗くなる前に、暗くなる前に！」と言いながら、私は娘の家に急ぎました。夕暮れ時に無事に娘の家に着き、私は何度も神様に感謝しました。

私が「暗くなる前に、暗くなる前に！」と言い続けているうちに、聖書の箇所が思い浮かんできました。
ヨハネの福音書9:4です。
「わたしたちは、わたしを遣わした方のわざを、昼の間に行なわなければなりません。だれも働くことのできない夜が来ます。」

夜が来るので、私達は急いでできるだけ多くの人々に福音を宣べ伝えなければなりません。グズグズしてる暇はありません。この世は霊的にすごく暗くなっているし、近いうちに主の再臨があるかも知れません。だから今のうちに熱心に伝道しましょう。

「主の日が夜中の盗人のように来るということは、あなたがた自身がよく承知しているからです。しかし、兄弟たち。あなたがたは暗やみの中にはいないのですから、その日が、盗人のようにあなたがたを襲うことはありません。あなたがたはみな、光の子ども、昼の子どもだからです。私たちは、夜や暗やみの者ではありません。ですから、ほかの人々のように眠っていないで、目をさまして、慎み深くしていましょう。」

BEFORE IT GETS DARK 

Last Sunday I went to the town of Linville in the state of North Carolina. Linville is a town on a mountain where there are many ski resorts. I intended to spend the night in Linville, but according to the weather report, there was a possibility of heavy snow. The pastor of the church urged me to return after the afternoon service. If I did not, I might not be able to leave Monday morning.

The afternoon service ended about 3:00, so I quickly got in the car and headed for my daughter Merri’s home in a town called Raleigh. It takes about four hours, so I drove at a high speed. Since I have gotten older, my eyes have become weaker, so I avoid night driving as much as possible. As I hurried toward my daughter’s home, I kept repeating, “Before it gets dark. Before it gets dark.” When I arrived safely at my daughter’s home about dusk, I thanked the Lord over and over again.

A verse of Scripture came to mind as I kept saying, “Before it gets dark. Before it gets dark.”
It was John 9:4.
I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. Night is coming, so we must hurriedly preach the gospel to as many people as possible. There is no time to dilly-dally. This world is going to become darker and darker spiritually, and the second coming of Christ might take place soon, so let’s be zealous in evangelism now.

For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
