私を励ましてくれた先輩

私は76歳で、いろんな病気を患っています。
現在、足のニューロパシー痛（末梢神経障害）は特に大きな持病となっています。
さらに、私の健康状態はすぐに疲れやすい体質となっています。
だから時々引退する誘惑に駆られます。

しかし、最近一人の先輩が私を励ましてくれました。
彼の名前はジョージ・キング師です。キング先生は1960年から日本で伝道している86歳の宣教師です。
キング先生もいろんな病気を患っています。歩く時、杖を使用しなければなりません。
また左の腕に大きなギブスを付けているので服のボタンを掛ける時など、とても困難だそうです。

先日、私はキング先生と交わる機会が与えられました。数時間の中で引退の話は出ませんでした。
おどろく事にキング先生のビジョンである「開拓伝道の計画」について語ってくれました。

彼の話を聞きながら、私はヨシュア記14章 に書いてある85歳のカレブという人物の言葉を思い出しました。
「どうか今、主があの日に約束されたこの山地を私に与えてください。あの日、あなたが聞いたように、そこにはアナク人がおり、城壁のある大きな町々があったのです。主が私とともにいてくだされば、主が約束されたように、私は彼らを追い払うことができましょう。」
ヨシュア記14:12

皆さん、覚えて下さい。神様のための奉仕に年齢制限はありません。私たちは青年だけが主に仕える事ができると思ってはいけません。
年齢にかかわらず、主の再臨まで熱心に主に仕えましょう。
私たちは、ただ主の再臨を待っている
「ロッキングチェア・クリスチャン」になってはいけません。
カレブと同じように、自分も登る事ができる山を見つけて
「登山クリスチャン」になりましょう。

THE OLD MAN WHO
　　　ENCOURAGED ME

I am 76 years old and am suffering from various illnesses. The neuropathy in my feet has especially become a major problem. In addition, I tire quite easily, so now and then I am tempted to retire.

However, recently an old man encouraged me. His name is George King. He is an 86-year-old missionary who has been doing evangelism in Japan since 1960. He too is suffering from various illnesses. When he walks, he has to use a cane, and there is a large cast on his left arm, so doing such simple things as buttoning a shirt is difficult for him.

The other day I had the privilege of having fellowship with him. During our several hours together, there was no talk of retirement. Surprisingly, most of the time he talked about his plans for future evangelism.

As I listened to him, I remembered the words of an 85-year-old man named Caleb written in chapter 14 of Joshua.
Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the LORD spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the LORD said.

Please remember that there is no age limit in our service to the Lord. We must not think that only young people can serve the Lord. In spite of our age, let’s serve the Lord faithfully until His coming.

We must not become
“rocking chair Christians” who are waiting on the Lord to come. Like Caleb, let’s find a mountain that we too can climb and become
“mountain-climbing Christians.”

“Be faithful until death”. (Revelation 2:10)
