86㎏の差

二人の関取が土俵に上がった時、私は思わず笑いました。
一人は99㎏の炎鵬（えんほう）で、もう一人は185㎏の徳勝龍（とくしょうりゅう）でした。
そして思いました。「この取組はすぐに勝負が決まるでしょう。徳勝龍の勝利に間違いない！」しかし、徳勝龍に追い込まれた炎鵬はうまく体を躱して徳勝龍を寄り切り勝利しました。
両国国技館の観客席も私も大いに盛り上がりました。

この取組の勝利を見て、聖書の中のどの物語を想像したと思いますか？
はい、そうです。第1サムエル記17章に記録されているゴリヤテとダビデの戦いです。
4節によると、ゴリヤテの背の高さは2.85mでした。
42節によると、ダビデはまだ少年でした。ゴリヤテは戦士でした。ダビデは羊飼いでした。彼等の戦いは、あっと言う間に勝負が決まる巨人のゴリヤテの圧勝であった筈ですが、読者が知っているように、ダビデはゴリヤテを倒し勝利する事ができました。
なぜ、少年ダビデは経験豊な兵士であった巨人ゴリヤテに勝利する事ができたのでしょうか。
45節でダビデはゴリヤテに言いました。
「おまえは、剣と、槍と、投げ槍を持って、私に向かって来るが、私は、万軍の主の御名によって、おまえに立ち向かうのだ。」
ダビデは神様が自分と一緒におられる事を確信していたから、彼は勇敢に戦って勝利を得る事ができました。

クリスチャンは神様が私と共におられると信頼する時、日々の歩みの中でどんなに恐ろしい「巨人」に遭遇しても、神様が与えてくださる力によって勝利を得ると確信しています。

A DIFFERENCE OF 189 POUNDS　

When the two sumo wrestlers stepped into the circle, I laughed. One of them was 218-pound Enho. The other one was 407-pound Tokushoryu. I thought, “This match will be over soon. Tokushoryu will surely win.”

At first, Enho was grabbed by Tokushoryu, but he skillfully moved his body and pushed Tokushoryu out of the circle. I roared with excitement along with everyone at the match.

When I saw the result of the match, what Bible story do you think I remembered? Right, the story of the battle between David and Goliath recorded in chapter 17 of First Samuel.

According to verse 4, Goliath was 9 feet, 6 inches tall. David was just a youth. Goliath was a soldier. David was a shepherd. Their battle should have ended quickly in an overwhelming victory for Goliath, but as you know, David was able to defeat Goliath.

Why was young David able to defeat an experienced soldier like Goliath? In verse 45 David said to Goliath, You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel. Because David was assured of the fact that God was with him, he was able to fight valiantly and gain the victory.

Because the Christian is assured of the fact that God is with him, no matter how ferocious a “giant” he meets in his daily life, he understands that he can gain the victory through the power that God gives him.
