54年間かかったマラソン

1912年のオリンピックは、スウェーデンのストックホルムで行われました。
このオリンピックに参加した日本人は、２人だけでした。
その一人は「マラソンの父」と呼ばれている金栗四三です。彼は、熊本県の玉名市で生まれました。

日本からスウェーデンまで18日もかかった旅のために疲れ切った金栗は、マラソンの途中で気絶してしまいました。
そして熊本の農家の家族が彼を助けてくれたのです。自分の失敗を恥ずかしく思った金栗は、誰にも連絡せずに帰国しました。

スウェーデンのオリンピックの役員は、50年間彼が行方不明になったと思っていましたが、1967年に彼らは、彼がまだ生きていて日本に住んでいるとわかりました。
スウェーデンのテレビ放送局は、彼にスウェーデンに戻ってマラソン完走させるチャンスを与えました。
金栗は、その企画を受け入れてスウェーデンに戻ってマラソンを完走しました。
54年8ヶ月6日5時間32分かかったマラソンです。

聖書の中でクリスチャンの生活は、マラソンとたとえられています。（ヘブル人への手紙12:1）
私たちも試練や困難に遭って、疲れ果てて気絶する時があります。そして、回復して私たちも再び自分の人生のマラソンに立ち返って、ゴールまで走り続けましょう。

多くの困難に遭ったパウロは、Ⅱテモテへの手紙4:7でこの言葉を書きました。
「私は走るべき道のりを走り終えました。」神様は、私たち一人ひとりに走るべき道のりを与えてくださいました。
ゴールまでの途中でどんなことが起こっても、その道のりを走り終えましょう。

　　　

THE MARATHON
　　THAT TOOK 54 YEARS

The 1912 Olympics were held in Stockholm, Sweden. Only two Japanese participated in those Olympics. One of them was Shinzoo Kanakuri who is called the “father of the marathon” in Japan. He was born in the town of Tamana in Kumamoto Prefecture.

Weakened by the 18-day trip from Japan to Sweden, Kanakuri collapsed during the marathon. A farming family found him and helped him. Ashamed of his failure, Kanakuri returned to Japan without telling anyone.

For 50 years the Sweden Olympic officials thought he was missing, but in 1967 they discovered that he was still alive and living in Japan. A Swedish TV company offered him the opportunity to return to Sweden and complete the marathon. He accepted the offer and went back to Sweden and ran the marathon. It was a marathon that took 54 years, 8 months, 6 days, 5 hours and 32 minutes.

In the Bible the life of the Christian is compared to a marathon. (Hebrews 12;1) There may be times when we too, weakened by trials and troubles, may collapse. However, after we recover, let us too return to the marathon of our life and continue running all the way to the goal.

Paul, who experienced many trials, wrote these words in Second Timothy 4:7. I have finished my course.
God has given each one of us a course that we should run. No matter what happens on the way to the goal, let us finish our course.
